At least 1600 species of orchids are known from Costa Rica. In the last 10 years, new species were discovered in the country on a regular basis. The most recent account by Karremans and co-workers 2012 (published in the latest issue of Lankesteriana, April 2012), records for the first time in Costa Rica several orchids previously known from Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama. Additionally, the article describes three new taxa, Epidendrum alieniferum, Epidendrum × sandiorum (a putative natural hybrid between E. oerstedii and E. ciliare) and Lepanthes kabebatae, all illustrated with color photographs and composite plates.
Other species described from Costa Rica and published by the staff of Lankester Botanical Garden in 2012 are: Dracontia lueriana, Lepanthes kleinii, Lepanthes tapantiensis, Lepanthes tristis and Oncidium henning-jensenii.
